The Challenge:

Design a 7,000 SF state of the art radiation oncology center within the footprint of an existing retail shopping center. It was important to the new owner to have comfortable and efficient patient, staff and treatment spaces.

AE Design Solution:

The existing Smithfield Plaza shopping center is located adjacent to Martin Memorial Medical center and several other medical facilities. The single story space for the proposed oncology center was previously occupied by a popular seafood restaurant. The interior space was completely removed and the cancer center-- including a radiation treatment vault, CT Simulator, HDR treatment vault, exam rooms, offices, reception, nurse station and waiting room-was designed within the narrow footprint of the existing space. The completed center sets the standard for radiation oncology healthcare services in a warm and comfortable setting.
