UAB Women & Infants Center #2 Birmingham, Alabama

The Challenge:

The University of Alabama asked AE Design to design a new high rise hospital building containing a new Woman and Infants Center, Radiation Oncology Center and Medical office building. The new high rise would be an extension to the adjacent University Hospital tower. The City of Birmingham required a new urban park to be incorporated with the new building site.

AE Design Solution:

AE Design, as the shell building architect and owner's representative, provided master planning for the new high rise hospital to be built in multiple phases around a new urban park located at the southeast quadrant of the city block planned for the new building. The new buildings architectural appearance continues the design motif of the existing adjacent building in which it is physically connected by a three level pedestrian bridge. The new building is designed with a universal column grid system to allow maximum flexibility of the different hospital functions that take place throughout the ten story hospital. Floors one and two house radiation oncology, three through five house pre and post labor/delivery and surgical suites, hospital beds are located on levels six through eight and professional office spaces are located on the top two floors. The central elevator core was organized so that travel between the hospital and clinic levels will be more convenient for the patients and staff.
